Transfer from Naples to Bari with stop to Matera

Today you are greeted in Naples and driven to Matera, known as the “City of the Sassi”.

Matera is one of the most ancient, peculiar and unique towns in the world and unique UNESCO site in Italy. Carved into the rock, Matera is composed of a network of caves inhabited since the Paleolithic era. Unknown to much of Italy, the city hid a society living in poverty; malaria was rife and families lived alongside their animals within the caves as a recently as the 1950s. From its position as “the shame of Italy”, it was crowned the 2019 European City of Culture. And the caves, once pits of squalor, are now sought after boutique accommodation.

During our tour, you will also admire some masterpieces of the Apulian-Romanesque and Baroque architecture, and you will immerse into the silence of ancient stone churches enlightened by the the beauty of sublime Benedictine and Byzantine frescoes.

Later we continue to Bari.

Sassi di Matera

Matera, located in Basilicata, is one of the world\'s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with roots tracing back 9,000 years to the Paleolithic era. Famous for the Sassi (ancient cave dwellings) and over 150 rock-hewn churches, it evolved from prehistoric caves into a Byzantine, Norman, and Renaissance settlement. After being declared a \"national shame\" due to extreme poverty in the 1950s, it has revived as a UNESCO World Heritage site and 2019 European Capital of Culture.
